Stick Figure – Smokin’ Love (feat. Collie Buddz)

Tune Of The Week: June 4

We have all been around a band or manager who pushes new music our way, with a promise that goes something like this “nah man if you heard that older stuff, you gotta check this out, this is the shit, it’s what they [the band] are all about, wait till the album drops its ridiculous, go ahead listen.”

When we hit play, we hope the music hits us back. If it does, our minds begin to race and invoke thoughts of all the places the song will go, all the venues the band could play. Those moments don’t happen enough and when they do, we remember.

Stick Figure‘s music has never let me down and his new single Smokin’ Love (feat. Collie Buddz) continues a trend that Scott Woodruff set years ago in his home studio, before ever hitting the road to perform shows. Scott developed a consistency in consecutively releasing songs that one-up themselves and his latest track follows that trend. We are honored to feature Stick Figure’s “Smokin’ Love” (feat. Collie Buddz) as the Rootfire Tune Of The Week.

Official Press Release:

Today, Southern California-based roots reggae/dub band Stick Figure release their latest single, “Smokin’ Love,” featuring reggae veteran Collie Buddz, offering a strong contender for “Best Feel-Good Song of the Summer.” “Smokin’ Love” is the first song they’ve released since their 2012 album Burial Ground.smokinglove-1024x1024

The track “Smokin’ Love” opens with swirling piano chords, catchy lyrics highlighting the band’s signature dub sound. The track details multi-instrumentalist, producer and singer Scott Woodruff’s upbeat narrative of wanting to smoke with the one he loves, highlighted in the lyrics:

“I wanna get high, I wanna get low, come on I wanna smoke little spliff with you / Lord knows I’m not a fool, I’m crazy for you.”

“Smokin’ Love” was recorded the same way as all their songs; in Woodruff’s home studio with each instrument individually recorded and layered in unison to one other. The band has previewed the track through their social media sites and have recently started playing it live. The group will be hitting the road this Summer with Rebelution for their “Count Me In” tour, which also includes Iration and The Green.

Seth founded Rootfire while he was managing a group of influential modern reggae acts, including The Green, John Brown’s Body, and Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad. The goal of the project has always been to connect the people who participate in the modern reggae movement.
