Album Showcase: Skarra Mucci – “Perfect Timing”

Skarra Mucci, the Jamaican reggae and dancehall artist known as the “Dancehall President,” was born and raised in the capital city of Kingston. He started singing in church at the age of 9, demonstrating talent at a young age which led to believe he was destined to forge a career in music. Dedicating his life to his craft, from there he developed his own style, whether writing hip-hop beats or riddims with a gospel infusion, as a vehicle to express his thoughts and passions.

Skarra Mucci’s diversified sound and multiplicity of talents have brought his presence to a global level, sharing stages all over the world with the heavy hitters such as Beenie Man, Yellow Man, and many more. With seven solo albums under his belt and many high profile collaborations, his hits have garnered millions and millions of streams.

With five years since his previous LP, The One Love Family, Skarra Mucci returns to rock our souls on another level, like a fiery phoenix bird rising to soar and share the new magical beats that will lift our spirits so high! His new album, Perfect Timing, is a true-to-the-bone dedication to the soundsystem culture in which he came up in, including tracks with guests such as Martinique dancehall sensation, Yaniss Odua, French production collective, L’Entourloop, French digital reggae riddim maker/producer, Manudigital, and, to top it off, one of the most popular Jamaican dancehall artists of all time, Johnny Osbourne.

Perfect Timing has 13 tracks and, let me tell you, this album is fantastic! I haven’t been shaken by a reggae artist’s new album in a bit, but this album has done the trick.

The album opens with “Here I Come,” a roots rocker with Skarra Mucci singing Rasta lyrics about returning to Zion. The song begins with the following spoken-word message which sets the tone for the album:

As we proceed in a world where everyone is crying about something

The same thing, racism, oppression

I come with the fire of purification to all people upon this planet

I bring you love and happiness

This is probably my favorite song on the album, as its intention is about standing up and making the world aware there is still pain and suffering, and we cannot ignore this.  Its beats are smooth and strong adding extra juice to its powerful lyrical content.

“Street Dance” features a collab with L’Entourloop and brings the house down with its wicked flow. Skarra Mucci released a highly entertaining  video for this song, which delivers a narrative through animation that shows the Dancehall President going through hell and high water to get to one of his performances.

Another standout track, “Roots Rock Reggae,” features Yaniss Odua and has a great beat with intense vocals, a sound so riveting that begs to be listened to again and again. This song also has an accompanying video shot in the streets of Marseille, France, that captures that true local vibe showing everyone coming together as one.

“Rappa Pam Pam,” has that sweet dancehall groove we all love that gets you out of that chair, while the lyrics unite us to get up and do what we got to do!

The album concludes with “Perfect Timing,” which literally comes at the perfect time!  With a beautiful message about love and waking up every day to feel the sun on our faces, this song shines a positive light over all of us as it encourages us not to throw life away with negativity and just allow the good vibes to flow. It will make you want to grab your dance partner and get down all night long.

This gift of an album combines Skarra Mucci’s diverse vocals — from singing to toasting — with talented collaborators, highly addictive riddims and lyrical messages that bring joy and happiness with a twist of strength.  A beautiful audio canvas, it endorses Skarra Mucci as an unstoppable force that will continue to be on the forefront of modern reggae music.
