Vinyl Giveaway: King Jammy Presents Cultural Roots “Running Back To Me” Vinyl LP

Win a copy of Cultural Roots’ “Running Back To Me” Vinyl LP, courtesy of VP Records. Enter below.

Originally released by Mango Records in 1988, Cultural Roots’ Running Back To Me features prime King Jammy digital production that brought forth hits like Wayne Smith’s “Sleng Teng” and would dominate Jamaican music between 1985-1995.

Cultural Roots emerged as a four-part harmony group for producer Donovan Germain in the late 1970s, releasing two albums, featuring a line-up of Wade Dice, Hubert Brooks, Norman Gallimore, and Everton Drummond. The group with its original lineup then recorded for Junjo Lawes, releasing Hell A Go Pop in 1984, one of the Greensleeves label’s lesser-known classics.

The group reemerged in 1988 with a new trio lineup for King Jammy, with singer Lloyd Grandison joining Wade Dyce and Hubert Brooks. Standout tracks on Running Back To Me include the “His Majesty Reign,” which was penned by Wade Dyce and epitomizes the group’s lyricism and spirituality; and the moving “Passion Lover,” which shares the backing track with one King Jammy’s all-time smash hits, Frankie Paul’s “I Know The Score.” Singer Devon Russell would join Cultural Roots after the departure of Hubert Brooks.
