If I told you to rewind the clock five years, where would you be? Realistically, most of us were locked in our homes, watching blue summer skies smear into a palette of wispy autumn clouds as time dissolved into a blur of redundant mundanity. For Marco Martinez, however, 2020 was the year the divine music of Mellodose began etching itself into the playlists of our hearts. That October, he released “Hey Hey,” a defining tune of the Mellodose DNA and a deeply personal track for Martinez himself.
Now, five years later, with the skies wiped of confinement, “Hey Hey,” is getting a fresh new splash of sound with musical mastermind Kurt Jansohn of One Culture and Third Island Productions producing the remix while also laying down a brand new verse. Crucial elements from the original – Jeremyck Smith’s tasty organ, Dylan Savage of Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad’s uplifting vocals, and Mellodose’s wife, Katie’s, harmonic singing – continue to shine throughout the revitalized new mix.
When talking with Mellodose, he uncovered the beautiful story behind the track by telling me, “It was probably about June or July 2020 when I started working on the instrumental and writing the song. I had only been releasing music as Mellodose since February of that year. So it was brand new for me. I was just following my bliss, writing music about my life. And a lot of the songs were about the life I was discovering and sharing with my wife, Katie, who at the time was my girlfriend. We had been fortunate enough to do a lot of traveling together, so this song was particularly inspired after a trip to Puerto Rico, where she met all of my extended family.”
As the original mix of “Hey Hey” fades away, the final moments dissolve into an intimate voice memo, an ambient goodbye underscored by the song of the coquí, the native frog of Puerto Rico. This delicate detail turns the track into something more than sound, but more like a memory preserved, looping endlessly in the folds of time.
The remix of “Hey Hey” begins where the original left off, by fading in with the lone voice memo of Mellodose singing the lyrics that open the heart. The sparkling tones of early experimentation are now grounded with depth and experience. The track doesn’t chase nostalgia; instead, it reimagines it with a brighter, fuller sound. It’s the same heartbeat, but with a steadier rhythm. In some ways, it’s a reflection of Mellodose’s growth, gratitude, and the long road from inspiration to musical mastery. While the original was a love letter to the moment, this remix feels like a conversation with the past, grateful for where it began and confident in where it’s heading.
When asked about some of the refinements to the song, Mellodose told me, “I sent Kurt the original stems. It has my wife’s vocals, my vocals, Dylan Savage’s vocals, and then all the original guitars and stuff. Then I was like, ‘Kurt, do your thing, man! Do whatever you do for One Culture songs!’ We have a whole album together [Ocean of Truth], we love writing together, and I love his production. So I just sent him everything.” He further explained that Jansohn added the signature One Culture drum and bass sound and extended the remix with a brand new One Culture verse, as well as new lead guitar parts.
Jansohn isn’t merely the producer behind the remix; rather, the architect of its rebirth. With One Culture, he’s long been known for weaving warmth and precision into the same breath, and on “Hey Hey,” that synchronized duality shines. The way Jansohn treats sound is like sunlight bleeding through stained glass, by bending it, coloring it, and finding new shades in the familiar. Under his touch, the percussion feels like a heartbeat, the groove moves like an Atlantic high tide, and the vocals of Mellodose rise with a quiet confidence that’s been earned through time.
The remix of “Hey Hey” doesn’t erase the intimacy of its origins; it expands it, making it feel evermore eternal. As a melody that continues to evolve, it reminds us that growth doesn’t always mean moving on. Sometimes, it’s about returning to what moved you first, and hearing it with brand-new ears. In the end, “Hey Hey (Remix)” isn’t just a new mix, it’s a living thread that connects memory, love, and limitless possibility.
