First Watch: The Late Ones – Tell Me Not

“The inspiration behind ‘Tell Me Not’ comes from the unconditional love and support that we receive from that one girl who through thick and thin, has stood by your side.” – The Late Ones

Gardena, California’s The Late Ones are out with a new music video for their recent single “Tell Me Not,” (Easy Star Records) an aesthetically pleasing accompaniment to this tasteful love homage. At first glance, the video holds all the fail-safe characteristics of West Coast hip-hop, mixing live footage with scenes featuring palm trees, city night-life and of course the heroine love interest. But what this familiar backdrop effortlessly provides is a directed focus straight to the lyrical prowess of The Late Ones.

Reminiscent at times of Mos Def’s “Ms. Fat Booty,” the rhythmic flow found on “Tell Me Not” is at the heart of what makes The Late Ones such an engaging act to listen to. Familiar yet distinctly original, vintage but undeniably fresh. California in its execution and Samoan at its roots, the fusion of hip-hop and reggae found across The Late One’s collection make them accessible to an expansive and diverse fanbase. Given the weight and integrity found in their words, let’s hope that fanbase does nothing but grow.
