Last month I sailed to Jamaica on a boat that was the size of the tallest unfinished building in my city and held two times as many people as the village I grew up in. Once the sun set over the Caribbean Sea on the first night, we quickly lost cell service, and life reverted to 1999 settings. No more text messages; it was all about hatching plans in the hallways with old friends and making joyful semi-drunk introductions to new ones in the elevators.
There were three constants on the ship: #1) Every time you had a quiet minute you could count on yourself looking around, and saying “Is this real? How are we so lucky to be the floating excitable crew?” #2) Someone was always cracking “Washy Washy” jokes just when it wasn’t funny any more. #3) The house PA system constantly pumped major jams to keep the party rolling 24/7.
I tracked down the master iPod playlist for the ship and out of the 367 tunes that made up the unceasing soundtrack, I put together three hours of mostly reggae tunes from nearly 50 artists that represented the flavor of the Norwegian Pearl on those four endless nights. Welcome to Part 1 of the master iPod playlist from the 311’s Soundsystem Jamaica Caribbean Cruise. I hope you enjoy it.
Following and might re-blog…thanks!
